Following Up After the Interview

Alumni often wander if they should follow-up after an interview or if it will seem too desperate or aggressive. If you have not heard back by the date the interview committee told you, then by all means follow-up . You really have nothing to lose. Recently an alumni found herself in this situation and contacted me about what to do. After encouraging her to follow-up and even practicing some possible dialogue, she made the call. Fortunately she found out that she was still being considered and the process was just taking longer than they expected. The brief phone call certainly gave her increased confidence.

Thank-you notes and follow-up calls are not an option, they are a necessity! I know of several hiring processes in which candidates who do not agressively follow up are automatically dropped from consideration, regardless of qualifications.

A recent panel of recruiters mentioned that only about 5% of candidates actually send a follow-up thank-you note. They certainly said it can make a difference.
